Why you shouldn’t guess sexual orientations

Many people perceive me as a lesbian. From how I dress to the way I talk, I apparently send up flags on people’s gaydar. In fact, despite being in a committed relationship with a man for over 5 years, people urge me to come out of the closet.

I understand why people assume I’m a lesbian. However, this assumption has caused me unnecessary distress and pain. It has killed my friendships, damaged my relationships with family, and ultimately made it very difficult to accept myself.

I am probably one of the few straight people that have undergone severe questioning of…

I have lost weight, become happier, and deepened my relationship in 30 days

A few months ago, I was on the search for exercise habits to help me lose weight. Usually, once I get fed up enough with my weight, I will look for some way to drop the weight. After a few months of losing weight, I will usually move on to something else or allow my busyness to become an excuse.

Due to the pandemic, there weren’t many options for exercising outlets. Therefore, my partner encouraged me to come on walks with him, while he walked his dog. Since I had gained so much weight, walking was painful. …

A 3-part plan to transition from employee to entrepreneur

When you start a business, you may or may not have intentions of leaving your full-time job. You could be like me where I was looking for an escape and hoping that my newfound income could support me. However, you could just be excited to pursue a business idea, never expecting it to become your full-time job.

For those that want to transition to full-time entrepreneurship, you may think that the only way to do this is to wait until your business income equals your income from your job. While this is a safer path, it is not the only…

Make money management easy and start thriving

Managing your finances in your 20s can be difficult. For many of us, we are dealing with debt, attempting to live within our budget, and trying to figure out how to move our lives forward.

For a long time, I avoided thinking about my finances too much. It was a cause of stress that I felt wasn’t worth it until something went wrong. Luckily, I was fairly frugal and never ran into a situation where I didn’t have sufficient funds.

Now that both my partner and I are in full-time positions, I decided it was time for me to take…

How to avoid the emotional rollercoaster of house hunting

Photo by Ralph Kelly on Unsplash

The housing market is insane right now. Houses are regularly selling thousands of dollars over list price. Real estate agents are suggesting against inspections and any conditions just to give you a chance at a house.

After a very random conversation one evening, my partner and I got pre-qualified for a mortgage, contacted a real estate agent, and started looking at houses in two days. By the next day, we already had an offer in on our first house.

Despite a sale price that was $15,000 and an escalation clause $35,000 above asking, we were outbid. Suddenly our dreams of…

How many have you been confusing?

Misusing mental health terms can increase mental health stigma and confusion. Yet, many people use mental health terms without knowing their meaning. Here are the three most commonly confused mental health disorders!

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) vs. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often used to describe a clean and organized person. An example of this would be when someone likes for their pens to be a specific way. This type of person may have Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), but not OCD.

OCD describes a person who does the same behavior regularly to manage their anxiety. For example, a person with OCD might need to unlock and…

Even if you don’t think you have anything to share

Photo by Harrison Kugler on Unsplash

A year ago, I learned about content creation. First through YouTube, then Medium, then through blogs and podcasts.

Before I considered making money from content, I was interested in the idea of sharing the tips that I had realized through the years that would make others' lives easier.

I loved talking with people and sharing my advice with them. Content creation would allow me to share this advice with anyone that could find my content.

Over the last year, I have tried my hand at every form of content creation and have become passionate about the different ways to be…

Don’t make my mistake

I lost all of my money as a sophomore in college to a scam. My shame has prevented me from talking about this experience for the last eight years. However, my experience helped a friend of mine avoid the same scam five years later. Therefore, I wanted to share my story to help you from losing your money to the same scam.

How I Lost My Money

In the summer between freshman and sophomore year of college, I wanted to find alternative ways to bring in more money. My mom shared a site that I could find online jobs. …
